About this site
This is an incomplete demo, live on the Internet because I have no shame. I'm looking for feedback but also help. Hit me up if you're game!
Search feels broken. There's a lot of great stuff on the web, but when I try to find what I need, I find myself wading through a whole lot of crap.
So much of the web is built to harvest ad revenue from pages found via search, and some of it is actually great, but most is decidedly not. And with the rise of "AI" (Scare quotes because this stuff is not intelligence. We need new words.) it's going to get a lot worse, fast.
Anyhoo, a website like this has been on my mind for several years now, and feels even more essential at this moment. So, yeah, here ya go. I'd love to build a place to find the good stuff. Specifically, the good stuff that regular folks need. Ideally, written by professionals. We'll see if that works out.
FAQ
Where's [my favorite website]?
It's a big Internet and I'm only a geek for so many things, so if you've got thoughts for sites that should be here, please send me a reply! I'd also take recommendations for categories/subcategories. The plan is to stick to topics related to the home: gardening, cooking, home improvement, etc., though I might be convinced otherwise.
How does it work?
This version of the site uses Google Search, with websites included via "site:" parameters. Google limits searches to 32 terms, so I'm limiting each category/subcategory to 25 sites, leaving us an ample seven terms to search by. That might change, and I might set up a proper search engine of my own. But for the moment, let's see how this goes.
What did you use?
Justprotips.com was built with the lovely static site generator, Eleventy. It's hosted on netlify, which is delightful to use. The data lives in Airtable. Soothing blues and searing reds via Team Zissou and Present & Correct.
